MCP Members Tell Chakwera To Fire People Named In Sattar Corruption List

A grouping calling itself General Membership of Malawi Congress Party has called on President Lazarus Chakwera to dismissed public officers whose names have been implicated in corruption activities initiated by United Kingdom based Malawian businessman Zuneth Sattar.

Last week social media platforms and mainstream media reported that senior officials in the Tonse Alliance government including vice President Saulos Chilima have been named in the UK court as some the people involved in corruption activities allegedly initiated by Sattar.

In a letter signed by the grouping’s publicist Zinenani Magola and Secretary General Alex Major said Chakwera should take a bold decision and relieve every person named in the list off their duties.

Speaking on Tuesday during a media briefing Chakwera said he cannot act on hearsays because his office has not been served with any report on the same, adding to that Chakwera said the said list is in UK courts and not in Malawi.

Chakwera added that he cannot take any step regarding the issue since the mentioned people have not been questioned or given a platform to clear their names, on the same, he has since called on the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) which is working hand in hand with the UK government on investigating Sattar to expedite the investigations.

When asked if he would have acted differently if the list was in local courts, without hesitation, Chakwera said yes.

Apart of Chilima, Minister of Sports and Youth Richard Chimwendo Banda, Police Inspector General George Kainja, State House’s chief of start Chris Kapondamgaga and others are allegedly named in the Sattar corruption scandal.
