Pressure forces govt to shift briefing on power crisis in Malawi

Pressure has forced the Tonse Alliance government to shift the press briefing on the power situation in the country to tomorrow morning.

The briefing is expected to involve Minister of Information and Digitisation Gospel Kazako, Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, Escom Chief Executive Officer Kamkwamba Wayera Kumwenda, Egenco Chief Executive Officer William Liabunya and PML Chief Executive Officer Rosemary Mkandawire.

The presser which was originally scheduled to take place at 9am today was shifted to 1pm but as journalists had gathered waiting for the officials this afternoon, another announcement came through announcing the further postponement to tomorrow morning.

Reasons for the delay are yet to be known.

Some inside sources say the shift follows a letter from leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa asking President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to consider using the idle MK17 billion from the MK50 billions under MAREP.

Nankhumwa’s suggestion has attracted praises from Malawians.
