SUSPECTED HUMAN TRAFFICKER ARRESTED

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has arrested a woman identified as Martha Kalazi Mbewe suspected of being involved in human trafficking syndicate.

National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed of the development, saying the woman was arrested on Sunday.

“Kalazi Mbewe was caught while she was on run, she is being suspected to have been making passports for people to work in Middle East and she is expected to appear in court because she was among the people who were allegedly involved in human trafficking,” said Kalaya.

Minister of Homeland and Labor Jean Sendeza and Vera Kantukule has mentioned Kalazi Mbewe to be among the people who are suspected to be agents of human trafficking.

“There should a new law in the country which will detour the smuggling of migrants, the law will address the gap and domesticate the United Nations,” said Chairperson for the Commissioner Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda during the announcement of the findings and recommendations on the review of the immigration where it took place at Capital hotel in Lilongwe.

He also added that Malawi has no law that speaks of smuggling in persons. The commission has recommended a new migration act bill against the act of 1964 which is still used, and a 50 million penalty has been suggested found for smuggling people.

The chief justice has asked the establishment of a service commission for the immigration and citizenship under the constitution and state.
