CHANCO students reject requests to call off vigil

Students from the University of Malawi – have snubbed a request by the University’s Council to call off their vigil.

This follows a round table discussion by all stakeholders which held on Monday.

The stakeholders included Students Representative Council-SRC, Chancellor College Academic Staff Union and University Workers Trade Union.

Addressing students after the meeting , President of Unima Students Union Humble Banda said the vigil will continue today because the stakeholders failed to agree on the issue of to with the double cohort.

Banda also said the students should be mindful that management might close the university.

But in a memo , Mary Wasiri, Acting Registrar of Unima said during the meeting, the Students Presentative Council presented a new demand that the management of the University should assure them that come January 2023 all students should report for the second semester.

Wasiri said management thought it was premature to commit before recommendations from a task-force that was instituted to address the issue of the academic calendar.

The students have been holding the vigil since last Friday seeking a change in their school calendar which would see them take atleast five months of a holiday because there is another cohort of students which must attend studies during the said period.
