HRDC Makes U-Turn On Demos

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has made a U-turn on its earlier decision to hold anti-government demonstrations on December 7.

Last month, HRDC issued a 21 day ultimatum to the government to resolve the prevailing socio-economic and government challenges, or risk demos.

These include stopping non-essential presidential travels that drain the public purse, firing incompetent public officers, fixing the forex and fuel crises, addressing chaos in the Affordable Input Program (AIP) and firing Hellen Buluma as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the national oil company-NOCMA.

So far, according to the HRDC assessment, what has been fully done is the removal of Buluma, while the fuel and AIP issues are marked half done.

Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe, the group’s Interim Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa indicated that the government is addressing some key issues.

But he still pushes the government fire non performing public officers.
