The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has released a report on findings of the alleged corporal punishment that students face at Kalibu Academy.
MHRC revealed this today during the dissemination of findings from three investigations which it carried out recently at the MHRC Boardroom in Lilongwe.
Following the investigations, MHRC a report carrying finding the findings of corporal punishment which include digging, cutting grass, standing for long hours, “imprisonment” carrying rocks and bricks among others.
According to MHRC Commissioner Sunduzwayo Madise, there is a secrecy of belief at the institution that parents and guardians are asked to sign in form of an agreement to keep rules and regulations, once broken, it leads to dismissal of their child.
In addition to that, the commissioner revealed names of some members of staff who allegedly give corporal punishment to students and these include director for the school and the headmaster.
According to Madise Director of the School did not cooperate with the commission and never attended any hearing to discuss the matter.
The MHRC investigations were focused on; allegations of corporal punishment at Kalibu Academy; the matter of injuries suffered by police and a man accused of running over police officers, Clifford Khomba; and the shooting and subsequent death of fitness trainer, Chikondi Makawa.
