CHRR pushes for release of Linda Kunje’s driver

Human Rights activists have asked president Lazarus Chakwera to consider pardoning from prison, Jones Tewesa who is the driver to former Commissioner for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Linda Kunje, who has been released after their arrest for distracting a presidential convoy in 2020.

Michael Kaiyatsa of Center for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) said, Tewesa also deserves to be released, as they were answering same charges, arguing what has happened is a sign of selective justice, coupled with political reconciliation.

However, Chairperson for the human rights defenders coalition, Gift Trapence has called for explanation from the government on procedures which it followed, noting Tewesa was only taking orders from his boss.

Linda Kunje was sentenced to 18 months in prison while her driver, Jones Tewesa is serving a 15 months custodial sentence.
