Growing calls for fresh inquiry over Chizuma’s controversial arrest

There are growing calls from Malawians and different stakeholders for a new inquiry into the circumstances that led to the arrest Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma in December last year.

The 12 member commission of inquiry set up by President Lazarus Chakwera released a full report on Martha Chizuma’s controversial arrest which has been described by many as a missed target arguing that it hasn’t answered the question ‘who ordered Chizuma’s arrest?’

Among others, the Chizuma commission of inquiry faulted Chizuma for discussing sensitive matters with a third party in reference to the last year’s leaked audio clip. The report went further recommending that appropriate action should be taken against Chizuma for it believes that Chizuma committed an offense.

The inquiry also found the suspended Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni in the wrong for lacking sound judgement by prioritizing self-interests above the responsibilities of his office. He as well should face appropriate action on the same.

Meanwhile, seasoned journalist Kondwani Munthali has already written the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to institute fresh investigations into Chizuma’s scandalous arrest and the Commission has confirmed receiving the request.

Malawi Law Society’s (MLS) Honorary Secretary Chrispin Ngunde is hinting that it will formally react to the contents of the full report after it thoroughly studies the same.
