Lake Malawi Water Levels increase by 474.42 meters higher

The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has expressed worry over the rise of water levels on Lake Malawi by 474.42 meters above the sea level saying it will add up to cases of floods in some parts of the country.

According to the authority, this year’s lake levels are taking the highest route since 2010.

Chief Executive Officer for NWRA, Dwight Kambuku said the water levels are 47.5cm higher unlike the previous year.

In addition to that, Kambuku said a continuous rise would indicate that the country has adequate water resource reserves for adequate generation of hydro power, irrigation, navigation and recreation.

Chairperson of the Natural Resources and Climate Change Committee of Parliament, Werani Chilenga said it was good that the authority came out in time to warn people.

Chilenga has advised the department of environment to ensure that people are not constructing along the lake.
