STAKEHOLDERS ASKS JOURNALISTS TO REPORT MORE ON DISABILITY ISSUES

Journalists in the country have been urged to ensure that they report more on issues affecting people with disabilities in the country.

The call has been made at a training organized by journalists under the banner of Blantyre Press Club (BPC) in conjunction with Federation for Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) which is taking place at Mango Lodge in Zomba.

On his part, BPC president Blessings Kanache said that the training is part of a project in collaboration with FEDOMA and Malawi National Association of the Deaf – MANAD.

He also added that they want to push duty bearers mainly the executive arm of government to pass the Disability Rights Bill to become a law.

Kanache has since urged journalists to popularize the calls for the country to have improved law guiding people with disabilities.

According to FEDOMA, Executive Director, Simon Munde, the media remains a powerful tool in ensuring that information on such issues is known.

Munde concluded by saying that through media engagement, they expect that stories about people with disabilities will be highlighted and that the media will also lobby for improved laws.
