A 24-year-old TNM Mpamba agent has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a client in Mzimba District.
The suspect, identified as Obed Phiri, allegedly killed Chawezi Phiri, who had gone to withdraw money from his booth.
According to Mzimba Police Deputy publicist John Nyirongo, Chawezi asked Obed to insert his simcard in his phone to check his phone balance, but the simcard was not working.
Obed gave the simcard back to Chawezi, but he declined it, claiming that Obed had swapped the simcards. This angered Obed, and he came out of the booth and started assaulting Chawezi while shouting for help and referring to him as a thief.
A mob then joined in the assault. Chawezi was pronounced dead upon arrival at Malidadi Health Centre, and a postmortem revealed that he died from internal bleeding.
Obed has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
