HRDC denies blocking Mutharika from contesting as President

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has distanced itself from claims that the grouping is planning to block former President Peter Mutharika from contesting again as President in the forthcoming 2025 polls.

Last week a youth group in Mzuzu threatened to move the court to set age limits for all Presidential Candidates vying for 2025 Presidential bid.

According to the group, the youth right activists want the court to set 75 as the maximum age limit and anyone above that should not be allowed to contest.

This proposal attracted condemnation from the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) with many supporters accusing the HRDC of being behind the move.

The blue camp accused the HRDC of attempting to block Mutharika from contesting again.

But HRDC through its National Chairperson Gift Trapence denied of being behind the plot, saying any candidate is allowed to contest in the 2025 polls.
