HRDC condemns relocations of refugees to Dzaleka Camp

Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has condemned government for the ongoing exercise of relocating refugees from the Capital Lilongwe to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

In a statement, HRDC particularly expressed disappointment in the manner the exercise has been conducted saying it violates human rights.

Reads part of the statement: “These actions represent a gross violation of human rights and against international refugee law. Refugees are individuals who have fled their home countries due to several reasons that include war, ethnic, tribal and religious violence. They seek safety and protection, often leaving behind everything they know and love, in the hopes of finding a better life. It is our duty as a society to extend a helping hand, show empathy, and provide sanctuary for those in need.

Relocating refugees from cities is a heartless policy that disregards the basic principles of humanitarianism and solidarity.”

HRDC, has since called upon the government to immediately cease the relocation of refugees from their locations of residence and put an end to the use of arbitrary arrests.

“Instead, we urge the government to adopt a human rights approach that upholds the rights and dignity of refugees. This includes providing adequate support, resources, and access to essential services in urban areas, as well as ensuring fair and transparent processes for assessing asylum claims,” further reads the statement.

Meanwhile, at least over 350 refugees arrested yesterday are at Maula Prison.
