Civil society on climate change urges LL city council to accelerate process of relocating six miles dumpsite

The Civil Society on Climate Change has urged the Lilongwe City Council to expedite the process of relocating the six miles waste dumping site, citing its harmful impact on the city’s environment.

The call comes in response to the Malawi Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) imposition of a 5 million kwacha fine on the council’s failure to address waste management issues at the current site and comply with MEPA’s earlier directive to relocate to a safer location.

Julius Ng’oma National coordinator for CISONA said the council should prioritize an environmental and land assessment to identify a site that can be properly managed and free from surrounding threats.

Ng’oma emphasized the importance of the action by the council as the relocation has been delayed in the past.
