Suspected murderer on the run, angry mob set ablaze five houses in Nkhata-Bay

Police in Nkhata Bay have launched manhunt for suspects who brutally murdered a 19-year-old man Abel Banda in Malengasanga village and others who set ablaze five houses and damaged household items in Chivuta village in retaliation to their relative’s death.

Nkhata-Bay police spokesperson, Sergeant Kondwani James said a report filed at Chintheche Police Post revealed that the on June 10, 2023 Banda went to a drinking spree at Kachere Trading Centre where he spent time until late in the evening when he left for his home.

James further said, on his way back home Banda was attacked and stoned in the head by a man identified as Gift Kwenda, and sustained a serious cut and was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.

He adds that, immediately after the matter was reported to Chintheche police post, a quick action towards arresting the suspect was taken, but, had already escaped.

Ironically, when the relatives of the victim in Malengasanga village learnt about the death and ganged up and invaded Chivuta village the suspect’s home and set ablaze five houses including household items in retaliation.
