Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become one of the most talked-about figures on social media after producing a stunning performance against Spain in his country’s FIFA World Cup debut.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper, whose real name is Josimar Jose Evora Dias, was named Player of the Match after helping Cape Verde secure a memorable 0-0 draw against European champions Spain.
Despite spending much of the match under pressure, Cape Verde held firm thanks largely to Vozinha, who made seven crucial saves to deny Spanish stars including Ferran Torres, Pedri and Aymeric Laporte.
The result was particularly significant for Cape Verde, one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup, with a population of just over half a million people.
At the final whistle, an emotional Vozinha broke down in tears as teammates celebrated around him.
Speaking after the match, he revealed that thoughts of his late grandparents overwhelmed him.
“I cried because I grew up with my grandparents and they are not here. They passed away a few years ago and did everything for me and my life,” he said.
The goalkeeper also revealed that his mother was unable to attend the historic match because of visa and financial challenges.
“My mom had problems with the visa and money to pay, but I’m still very happy for all the people from Cape Verde today,” he added.
Vozinha currently plays for GD Chaves in Portugal’s second division and has enjoyed a lengthy career that has taken him across Angola, Moldova, Portugal, Cyprus and Slovakia.
His remarkable performance quickly captured global attention. Within hours of the match, his social media following reportedly surged dramatically as football fans around the world praised his display.
Among those impressed was Paul Pogba, who took to social media to praise the veteran goalkeeper’s performance.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano also highlighted Vozinha’s incredible rise, noting how the goalkeeper went from relative obscurity to worldwide recognition in just a matter of hours.
For many football fans, Vozinha’s performance was a reminder that World Cup fairy tales can still happen, with a 40-year-old goalkeeper from a small island nation becoming one of the tournament’s biggest stories overnight.
He has managed to gain more than 4 Million followers on Instagram just in 24 hours.
