President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has said that said the mining investments forum will play a major role in Malawi’s economy.
Chakwera said this during the opening of Malawi mining Investments forum at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe where the Multinational government representatives, development partners, mining experts and artisanal and small-scale miners were present to showcase Malawi’s rich array of minerals resources, there by fostering investment to achieve economic growth.
In his remarks, Chakwera said , the forum will provide opportunities for investment deals and information gathering for policy decisions in a bid by the ministry to have the sector grow to a level it can contribute at least, 10 percent to the GDP from 0.8 percent.
“It is optimistic that the minerals in the country can boost our economic status within the next six years, provided they are protected, given necessary infrastructure and safeguarded from exploitation through unfair mining contracts” he said
On her part Minister of mining Hon Monica Ching’anamuno said the country has most of the mineral materials that can be used to produce a lot of what the country imports
“Malawi has most of the mineral materials such as citing tiles, chalk used in schools, aluminium products, electronics, lithium batteries, fertilizers and many more” she said
The forum happened inside the Agriculture Tourism and Mining strategy promotion week, which started on the 19 April and expected to end on the 27th April 2024.
