Condom Shortage Forces Youth in Rumphi to Use Plastic Bags for Protection

A severe shortage of condoms in Bondi under Traditional Authorities Chikulamayembe and Chisovya in Rumphi District is reportedly forcing young people to use plastic bags as an alternative protection method.
Denis Mkandawire, Chairperson of the Youth Committee in Rumphi, confirmed receiving reports on the matter. He attributed the situation to a lack of access to sexual and reproductive health services, including condoms, in the area.
Rumphi District Youth Officer Ipyana Munthali acknowledged the challenge, explaining that the affected areas are difficult to reach by vehicle, making condom distribution a challenge.
He added that his office, in collaboration with health authorities, is working on a plan to reach out to the youth with both contraceptives and education on safe sex practices to address the crisis.
