Over 70 families from several villages under Traditional Authority Nkanda in Phalombe have fled their homes due to flooding caused by the overflowing Thuchira River.
According to local leader Jonathan Namale, affected residents have sought refuge at Sangale Primary School in Sabuni Group Village.
“The floodwaters entered people’s homes, forcing them to evacuate for safety,” Namale said.
The affected villages include Jailosi, Nthokole, Magereta, Sabuni, and Sekenawo.
Weather experts had earlier predicted heavy rains and strong winds in southern Malawi due to the effects of Cyclone Jude, expected to last from Monday to Thursday 13th March this week.
