Tay Grin Defends Temwa After Backlash Over Stage Outfit

Music veteran Tay Grin has publicly supported emerging artist Temwa following criticism of his bold stage outfit during the recent “From the Ashes”  concert at BICC in Lilongwe.

The controversy erupted after Temwa’s unconventional performance attire drew mixed reactions on social media, with some users calling it inappropriate while others praised its creativity.

In a passionate Facebook post, Tay Grin wrote: “Never let negativity dim your light. I loved your bold, fearless outfit. True artistry breaks boundaries.” The post has garnered thousands of reactions, reigniting debates about artistic expression in Malawi’s music scene.

The charity concert, organized after Tay Grin’s house caught fire Last month. Top artists including Lawi, Agide, Gwamba and Kell Kay were there supporting Tay Grin . While intended to raise recovery funds, discussions have unexpectedly shifted to fashion norms in entertainment.

Cultural commentator Wezi Mhango noted: “This reflects our society’s growing pains as younger artists challenge traditional expectations.”

Temwa has not commented but continues preparing for upcoming shows. Industry watchers suggest the attention may elevate his profile as Malawi’s music scene evolves.
