A two-year-old boy, Prosper Hamaleya, has died in Lusaka Zambia after being mauled by four dogs in a horrific incident that occurred on May 23, 2025.
According to Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi, the dogs belonged to retired Colonel Webster Simwanda, who allegedly failed to secure the animals before leaving his premises in New Kasama. The boy’s father, who works as a caretaker on a neighboring plot, had his two children Prosper and his four-year-old sister, enter the colonel’s yard through an unlocked gate while looking for water.
The dogs attacked Prosper, inflicting multiple deep wounds across his body. He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“We appeal to all dog owners to take full responsibility for properly securing their animals to prevent such tragic incidents,” said Chilabi.
Colonel Simwanda has since been detained by police as investigations continue. Authorities are considering charges including manslaughter and reckless or negligent conduct leading to loss of life.
The Lusaka City Council has also been engaged to seize the dogs involved in the incident. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased is being held at the UTH mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination.
