The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)’s Deputy Director of Operations, Bonface Kashololo, appeared before the Mzuzu Magistrate Court this morning following his arrest on Monday.

Kashololo is accused of assaulting Malawi Broadcasting Corporation’s  journalist Alex Mwangosi and intimidating officers at the Mzuzu Police Station.

He was reportedly involved in a confrontation shortly after the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested former Minister Jappie Mhango.

He was escorted to court by a large team of police officers, while outside the court premises, a crowd of DPP youth supporters had already gathered in solidarity.

Police say Kashololo faces three charges, including misconduct at a police station, intimidation, and common assault. He is expected to take plea soon as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, MISA Malawi, an organization that defends and promotes media freedom, freedom of expression, and access to information, has not yet commented on the matter. The silence comes amid growing calls from media practitioners for protection against political intimidation and violence.
