Police at Kabwata in Zambia have detained a 37-year-old man, Maybin Muliye of Kamwala South, in connection with the suspected murder of his girlfriend, Sipiwe Nyirenda, under unclear circumstances involving a poisonous substance.
According to authorities, the incident was reported on June 10, 2025, at approximately 23:30 hours by Constable Mufune of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Police Post. Muliye had brought Nyirenda’s lifeless body to UTH, claiming she had ingested a household insecticide.
However, officers at the UTH Police Post found inconsistencies in the suspect’s explanation and referred the matter to Maxwell Sibongo Police Post for formal investigation before the body was transferred to the mortuary.
Preliminary findings reveal that Muliye and Nyirenda had known each other for only six days and had recently begun cohabiting. The suspect reportedly had no knowledge of her residence or relatives.
He told police that around 20:00 hours on the day of the incident, Nyirenda had asked for water. Upon returning with it, he claimed to have found her foaming at the mouth. A bottle of insecticide was later discovered at the scene by officers.
Police say there were no visible injuries on the deceased, but the body has been taken to the UTH mortuary for a postmortem and further examination. Efforts are also underway to identify and locate the deceased’s family.
Maybin Muliye is currently in police custody and is being held on suspicion of murder pending further investigations.
Authorities are appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may help identify the deceased or shed light on the events leading to her death.
