A civil society group, Citizens for Credible Elections (CfCE), has informed the Lilongwe District Commissioner of their intention to hold a demonstration on June 26, demanding the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and MEC Chief Executive Officer Andrew Mpesi.

The group alleges that the two officials are heavily influenced by the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

In a letter addressed to the Lilongwe District Commissioner, Lawford Palani, the group claims that the two officials are compromised due to their perceived political biases, which could compromise the integrity of future elections.

The letter also expresses concerns about the MEC’s insistence on using Smartmatic machines despite objections from other stakeholders.

The letter, signed by Silvester Namiwa, leader of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), and three others, states:

“We would like to remind you that holding demonstrations is our constitutional right, and this letter is not a request but a notification to enable you to prepare.”

The group asserts that the demonstration is a response to the MEC’s perceived failures and biases, which could undermine the credibility of future elections.
