The quasi-religious governance watchdog, the Public Affairs Committee (PAC), has strongly condemned the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) for failing to act against panga-wielding thugs who attacked demonstrators in Lilongwe earlier today.
In a strongly worded statement co-signed by PAC Chairperson Monsignor Patrick Thawale and spokesperson Bishop Gilford Matonga, the body described the violence as “barbaric” and a clear violation of Malawi’s democratic principles.
“It is deeply disturbing that the Malawi Defence Force silently witnessed these criminal acts, an omission that signifies worsening negligence,” reads part of the statement.
PAC further noted that the situation is especially troubling given the MPS had previously assured participants at the 6th All-Inclusive Stakeholders Conference of their commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and maintaining law and order. The group’s failure to live up to that promise, PAC argues, casts doubt on the integrity and impartiality of state enforcement agencies.
The organization also reminded authorities that the right to protest is enshrined in the Constitution, regardless of the political affiliation of the organizers.
“Even if the demonstrations are led by opposition figures, it does not give those in power the right to suppress peaceful assemblies,” the statement added.
PAC has since called for a thorough investigation into the events and urged the security forces to recommit themselves to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Malawians.
