Police have arrested Egnat Katengeza, aged 51, in connection with the murder of Agnes Katengeza, a former employee of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, whose body was found in her car behind Gateway Mall in Lilongwe on September 24, 2023.

Egnat, the biological sister to the deceased, becomes the second suspect to be arrested in the high-profile case. His arrest follows earlier developments in December 2023, when Amos Katengeza, a 27-year-ood half-brother to the late Agnes, was also taken into custody.

According to Hastings Chigalu, spokesperson for Lilongwe Police, Amos confessed during questioning that the murder had been planned and executed under the direction of Egnat. At the time, Egnat was brought in for questioning but later released due to insufficient evidence.

“Following a deeper investigation, we have now arrested Egnat and formally charged her with the murder of her sister. Preliminary evidence suggests this was a financially motivated crime,” said Chigalu.

He added that investigations are still ongoing, and authorities anticipate further arrests as new leads develop.

Agnes Katengeza was widely known and respected, especially in financial and professional circles. Her sudden death shocked the nation, sparking calls for justice and a transparent investigation.

Police say they are committed to pursuing the case to its conclusion and ensuring all those involved face the law.
