Police in Blantyre are hunting for individuals suspected of fatally assaulting a man at Chikapa in Machinjiri after he was accused of stealing a mobile phone.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on the night of July 20, when the victim was believed to have stolen a handset at a local drinking spot.

Limbe Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Sam Kadyole, has confirmed the news and said preliminary investigations indicate the man allegedly snatched the phone and fled the scene.

“The phone’s owner raised an alarm after noticing the theft, prompting some people to chase the suspect. They caught up with him and severely beat him, leaving him unconscious,” said Kadyole.

The victim later succumbed to the injuries.

Police have since launched a manhunt for those involved in the mob justice and have strongly warned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

“Let the law take its course. Acts of mob justice are criminal and punishable under the laws of Malawi,” Kadyole said.
