Police in Karonga have arrested 23-year-old Francis Mvula on suspicion of stealing a Tecno Camon phone worth K350,000 from Kafikisila Village.
According to Karonga Police spokesperson Margret Msiska, the incident occurred on the night of August 12, 2025. The victim, Amad Chipeta, had left his phone on a table when he went to the market, leaving the suspect — his wife’s brother — at home. Upon returning, Chipeta and his wife discovered that the phone was missing and Mvula had vanished.
“On August 14, Chipeta found the suspect at his grandmother’s house and alerted the village police, who arrested and beat him before handing him over to Karonga Police Station,” Msiska said.
During questioning, Mvula confessed to stealing the phone, claiming he needed the money to start a business. He admitted to selling it for K100,000 in the Kaporo area, also in Karonga District.
Mvula, who hails from Mponda Village in Kilupula Sub-District, Karonga, will appear in court to answer a charge of theft, contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code.
