Officers from the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), accompanied by police, on Tuesday conducted a raid at the Area 9 residence of Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) president Enock Chihana in Lilongwe.
Sources close to the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the officials arrived at the property claiming to be investigating a tax-related issue concerning party-branded clothing allegedly imported into the country.
“They told me they came with a search warrant, though I did not see it. They claimed that insufficient duty was paid on AFORD T-shirts brought into the country,” said a source within the Chihana household.
The source added, “I informed them that Mr. Chihana was not present and therefore they could not enter the premises without his authorization.”
However, it is understood that the authorities are investigating a specific consignment believed to have entered Malawi through the Dedza border post. Preliminary scanner reports suggest that undeclared or under-declared goods may have been involved.
As of the latest updates, the gate to Chihana’s residence remains closed, but MRA and police officials are still stationed outside.
Neither MRA nor Malawi Police Service spokespersons were immediately available for official comment. AFORD officials have also yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
This development comes amid ongoing political tensions in the country, though it is unclear whether the operation is purely tax-related or has broader political implications.
