A violent altercation and subsequent revenge killing have left two men dead in Jason and Namuonjeza villages, under Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo District.
According to Masambanjati Police, 19-year-old Vedede Layi was killed in a suspected act of mob justice on August 26, after allegedly stabbing 36-year-old Harrison Mwandama during a dispute at a local beer hall the previous day.
Police spokesperson Amos Banda confirmed that the initial incident occurred on August 25, when an argument between the two escalated, leading to Vedede reportedly stabbing Mwandama. The victim succumbed to severe blood loss shortly after the attack.
In apparent retaliation, relatives of the deceased Mwandama allegedly hunted down Vedede and fatally assaulted him. His body was later discovered in Jason Village.
Masambanjati Police have strongly condemned the retaliatory killing, warning the public against taking the law into their own hands.
“We understand emotions run high in such situations, but mob justice is illegal and unacceptable. Those involved will be pursued and face arrest,” said Banda.
Investigations into both deaths are ongoing.
