6-Year-Old Girl Drowns in Lake Malawi at Tukombo, Nkhata Bay

A six-year-old girl, identified as Jostina Nkhata from Ching’amba Village, Traditional Authority Lulanga in Mangochi, has died after drowning in Lake Malawi at Tukombo in Nkhata Bay District.

According to Nkhata Bay Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Devoter Mithi, the child reportedly went to the lake with friends without informing her parents, who assumed she was playing within the village.

“In the evening, the girl did not return home, prompting her parents to search for her around the village, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The following morning, fishermen found her body floating in the lake,” Mithi said.

Medical officers at Kachere Health Centre confirmed that the girl died due to suffocation caused by drowning.
