Lilongwe Police Station is keeping in custody five women for allegedly stealing cellphones and other items valued at K3.2 million at Lilongwe Market.

The suspects have been identified as Chrissy Jameki (28), Dalitso Majawa (21), Selina Wela (18), Bertha Malindi (29), and Catherine Banda (20).

According to Lilongwe Police Deputy PRO, Sergeant Khumbo Sanyiwa, the women reportedly posed as fish buyers to exploit the busy market environment, targeting unsuspecting shoppers.

“On the morning of the incident, around 09:00 hours, the group allegedly used a razor blade to cut a victim’s bag and steal a Redmi 12 Pro-Max phone. Luckily, the victim managed to apprehend one of the suspects, which led to the arrest of the others,” Sanyiwa explained.

He added that further investigations revealed the group was also involved in stealing an iPhone 11 and a Tecno Spark 10 from other market-goers.

The suspects are currently in custody and are expected to appear in court to face charges.

Sergeant Sanyiwa emphasized that police are continuing investigations to identify any other individuals connected to the thefts.
