Malawi tobacco sales rakes over $13.3 million so far

Tobacco sales have raked in over 13.3 million dollars since the market opened two weeks ago, against 6.8 million dollars the same period last year.

Statistics from the Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) on the first two weeks of tobacco sales also indicate that volumes reached 11.19 million kilograms against 5 million from last year.

Both the volumes and revenue from this year’s tobacco sales in that period have exceeded that of last year same time by 100 percent.

This comes despite complaints from producers that prices being offered on the market are on the lower side as compared to the cost of production.

However, the average price remained on the lower side being at 119 cents as compared to 126 cents in the same period last year.
