Zomba police have arrested a 35-year-old woman for attempting to smuggle six SIM cards into Zomba Central Prison, hiding them inside a container of boiled Irish potatoes.
The suspect, Angella Sukali from Mwanafumu Village, was intercepted at the prison gate by wardens while attempting to deliver the contraband to inmate James Mkwacha, who is serving a 12-year sentence for robbery.
According to prison officials, Sukali had concealed the SIM cards among food items that included fried eggs and tomato stew. Warder Esther Richard, a gatekeeper, noticed suspicious activity and discovered the hidden SIM cards during a routine inspection.
Sukali reportedly admitted that Mkwacha had promised to pay her rent in exchange for smuggling the items. Authorities also recovered a mobile phone allegedly used by the pair to communicate.
The case has been handed over to police, and Sukali now faces charges for attempting to introduce prohibited items into a correctional facility.
