A 34-year-old man, Selemani Sekelani, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by the Nkhotakota Magistrate Court after being found guilty of defiling his 13-year-old daughter.

According to Nkhotakota Police spokesperson, Paul Malimwe, the incident occurred on the night of October 16, 2024. Sekelani’s wife had left their home to go to her village following a domestic dispute, leaving Sekelani and the minor alone in the house.

Malimwe stated that on that night, Sekelani went into his daughter’s room and coerced the child into sleeping with him, allegedly claiming he was not her biological father. The girl reportedly screamed for help, but Sekelani threatened to kill her, forcing her compliance.

The following day, the victim went to her mother and disclosed the entire ordeal, leading the mother to report the matter to Mwansambo Police. Medical examination results confirmed that the child had been defiled.

During his appearance in court, Sekelani pleaded not guilty to the charge, prompting the State to present two witnesses. Presiding Magistrate, Felix Phayiya, delivered the 14-year custodial sentence, stating that the punishment was intended to serve as a deterrent to others who might consider committing similar crimes.
