Police at Kanengo in Lilongwe have arrested a 27-year-old woman for allegedly scalding her 12-year-old son with hot water after accusing him of stealing K100.

Kanengo Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira confirmed the arrest and identified the suspect as Mphatso Khombe, originally from Mzizi Village under Senior Chief Kalumo in Ntchisi. The incident occurred in Area 50.

According to Ngwira, the victim  who is currently receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital  told police that on December 7, he took the K100 from home before going to a nearby place where his father had left his phone for charging.

When he returned home, his father scolded him about the behaviour but did not assault him. However, his mother reportedly became enraged, heated water, and poured it over his body, causing serious burns.

“After receiving the report, officers arrested the suspect and took the child to Area 25 Health Centre before he was transferred to Kamuzu Central Hospital due to the severity of the injuries,” said Ngwira.

The boy is a Standard 5 pupil.

The suspect will appear in court soon to answer charges related to child abuse and causing grievous harm.
