Police at Mponela in Dowa District are keeping in custody a 19-year-old man, Gova Mkoko, from Mkoko Village in the area of Senior Chief Mponela for being found in possession of alleged counterfeit maize seeds.

Mponela Police spokesperson Macpatson Msadala said the suspect was arrested at Khumalo Village following a tip that he was allegedly producing fake seeds by painting and packing them in Seed-Co and Delkab packets.

He said: “After searching the suspect’s house, police found 98 bags of alleged counterfeit maize seeds, each weighing 5 kilograms and bearing the Seed-Co logo; 23 empty sacks of Delkab maize seeds (777 and 8033); half a litre of dyeing substance; two weighing scales; and a roll of twine, which the accused was using to make the fake seeds.”

Msadala said all the items have since been seized. The suspect will appear in court soon to answer charges.
