The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has expressed concern over the arrest of three of its senior leaders, describing the move as politically motivated.

The party’s secretary general Richard Chimwendo Banda, Vitumbiko Mumba, and spokesperson Dr Jessie Kabwila were arrested by police between Friday and Saturday.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Lilongwe this morning, MCP officials condemned the arrests, saying state institutions were being used to punish political opponents.

Speaking on behalf of the party, MCP campaign director Moses Kunkuyu said the arrests amounted to political persecution under the guise of law enforcement.

Kunkuyu read out a statement naming the affected leaders and accusing authorities of targeting MCP members for political reasons.

Those present at the briefing included party treasurer John Paul, women’s leader Jean Sendeza, and other senior officials.

Police arrested Chimwendo Banda and Mumba on Friday, while Kabwila surrendered herself to police on Saturday.
