The Matero Local Court has dissolved an 18-year marriage after a woman accused her husband of denying her conjugal rights for seven years and failing to provide for the family.

The court heard that 35-year-old Mervis Mashoko, of Kabanana Township, sued her husband, 44-year-old bus driver Samora Njobvu, for divorce on grounds of neglect and denial of marital relations.

According to testimony before Magistrate Harriet Mulenga, the couple married in 2007 and have four children. Mashoko told the court that the marriage was initially happy but later deteriorated, resulting in a period of separation.

During the separation, Mashoko entered into a relationship with another man, Patrick Matongo, and became pregnant. She told the court that Njobvu later requested reconciliation despite the pregnancy and agreed to raise the child as his own.

However, Mashoko said the reconciliation failed, alleging that Njobvu refused to have sex with her for seven years and neglected his responsibility to provide for the family, which ultimately led to the breakdown of the marriage.

The court subsequently granted the divorce.
