The number of people who have died in a road accident that occurred on the M1 road between Senzani and Chitale in Ntcheu District has risen to five.
Ntcheu Police spokesperson Jacob Khembo confirmed the development, saying all the deceased were travelling in a Nissan Tilda (registration BW 2001) which was coming from Zalewa towards Chiingeni.
According to Khembo, the accident happened at Chitale, where the Nissan Tilda collided with a Toyota Hilux (registration IT 7102) driven by Ezekiel Mathabili (42), a Zimbabwean national. He added that the occupants of the Toyota Hilux were not injured.
Following the collision, all occupants of the Nissan Tilda sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Balaka District Hospital. Four of them were pronounced dead upon arrival, while the fifth victim died later while receiving medical treatment.
Khembo identified some of the deceased as MacFarlane Banda of Chilobwe in Blantyre and Nathan of Chileka, also in Blantyre. The identities of two men and one woman who also died in the crash have not yet been established.
Meanwhile, police have urged motorists using the M1 road to exercise caution, citing persistent rainfall in the district which has left some sections of the road slippery and dangerous.
