Six men are in police custody in Mzuzu for allegedly abducting and assaulting Kondwani Jere, 35, over an unpaid debt.
Deputy Spokesperson for Mzuzu Police Station Angela Harawa confirmed their arrest, saying ‘the incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, between 10:00 hours and midnight, at Chiputula Township in the City’.
Harawa says these suspects are namely Dumisani Kaunda (35), Esau Kumwenda (35), Atupele Khoma (35), Lumbani Mbewe (26), Jack Tambala (37), and Charles Chamdothi (23).
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that in December 2025, the victim who is a nurse by profession and working in Mzuzu, received K11,800,000 from the first suspect, Dumisani Kaunda, who works for FDH Bank in Chitipa, for business purposes.
However, the money was not paid back as agreed.
On January 9, 2026, Kaunda traveled from Chitipa to Mzuzu to follow up on the money and engaged the other suspects to assist in recovering the debt.
At around 10:00 hours, the victim was apprehended within Mzuzu City Centre and later forcibly taken to unfinished house in Chiputula Township and they assaulted him and poured unidentified substances mixed with water on his body, before the police officers later rescued and referred him to Mzuzu Central Hospital for medical examination and treatment,”explained Harawa.
The suspects will appear in court soon to answer charges of acts intended to cause grievous harm.
