Experts from various sectors in Malawi have praised President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for what they describe as a strong start during his first 100 days in office, following his election on 16 September last year.

The views were shared on the “Kulinji” programme aired on Times Radio, featuring analysts in economics, education, politics, and agriculture, who assessed the performance of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration against its campaign manifesto.

Before assuming office, the DPP manifesto outlined key commitments aimed at winning public trust and securing President Mutharika’s mandate as Malawi’s seventh President.

Education expert Benedicto Kondowe welcomed the introduction of free  secondary education but called on government to increase funding to the Student Loans Board to ensure that students selected to universities are able to complete their studies without financial hardship.

He also warned that education standards in the country are declining and urged government to address the situation urgently. Kondowe rated President Mutharika’s performance at 8 out of 10.

Economic expert Bertha Bangala Chikadza, commended President Mutharika and the DPP government for making visible efforts to manage the economy during the first 100 days in office. She awarded the administration a score of 7 out of 10, citing improved direction in economic management.

Political analyst Boniface Dulani noted that it is difficult to see major achievements within just 100 days, given the depth and complexity of Malawi’s challenges.

However, he criticised delays in appointing cabinet ministers, which he said slowed government operations. Dulani also raised concerns over the appointment of some officials who allegedly had pending court cases at the time of their appointment. He rated the President 6 out of 10.

Agriculture expert Leonard Chimwaza expressed confidence in the restructuring of boards and management at the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) and ADMARC, saying the moves give hope for improved performance in the agriculture sector. He gave President Mutharika a score of 9 out of 10.

Based on the assessments from all experts in the program, President Arthur Peter Mutharika received an average score of 7.5 out of 10 for his performance during the first 100 days in office
