One child has died while fourteen others sustained injuries following a road accident involving a minibus and a Scania truck on the Salima–Lilongwe M14 road on Tuesday.
The accident occurred at Khombe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District. According to an eyewitness, James Siliya, the minibus, which was carrying 15 passengers and travelling towards Lilongwe, collided with a truck that was coming from the opposite direction.
Dowa Police spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Alice Sitima, confirmed the incident, explaining that the truck driver, who was transporting subsidized fertilizer, swerved into the oncoming lane while attempting to avoid potholes on the road.
She said the impact caused the minibus to overturn three times. All the injured passengers were rushed to Mvera Mission Hospital, where a one-year-and-seven-month-old boy was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Sub-Inspector Sitima added that four passengers sustained fractures, while the others suffered minor injuries.
