Mayor Akmad Ampatuan of Shariff Aguak in Maguindanao del Sur, Philippines, survived an assassination attempt on Sunday morning after his armored vehicle withstood a grenade attack by armed suspects.

CCTV footage shows the assailants alighting from a white minivan and firing a grenade launcher at the mayor’s black SUV in Barangay Poblacion around 6:20 a.m.

The mayor was inside his bulletproof vehicle at the time and escaped unharmed, although his backup pickup truck was hit by bullets.

Two of his security escorts sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are receiving treatment at the Bangsamoro Regional and Medical Center.

Following the attack, a joint police and Army pursuit led to the killing of three suspected ambushers.

Authorities say this was the fourth attack targeting Ampatuan, following previous incidents in 2010, 2014, and 2019.
