The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of its Director of Communications, Edward Kauka, in a road accident.

The accident occurred along the notorious Zalewa–Chingeni stretch of the M1 Road, a section frequently cited for its high rate of fatal crashes.

According to preliminary reports from the scene, Kauka was driving an official government vehicle a 2025 Ford Everest, registration number MG224AR at the time of the tragedy.

Eyewitnesses accounts suggest the vehicle was traveling at a high speed before the driver reportedly lost control. The SUV is said to have veered off the road and overturned several times, ending up in a mangled wreck.

Kauka was reportedly alone in the vehicle when the accident happened.

Kauka was a seasoned communications professional who played a pivotal role in shaping MACRA’s public image and regulatory outreach. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the media and communications sector.

While images of the wreckage have been circulating on social media, authorities have urged the public to exercise restraint and respect for the grieving family.

“We are waiting for a formal report from the police and a statement from MACRA management. This is a huge blow to the authority,” a close colleague said in a brief comment.

Police in Balaka are currently at the scene to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and MACRA in due course.
