Two men and two teenagers have been injured after an airbag from an old car steering wheel exploded at Makata/Ndirande in Blantyre.

Ndirande Police spokesperson Chibisa Mulimbika identified the victims as Given Marley, 23, Louis Billy, 20, and two 14-year-olds, Stanford Marley and Fatchi Mbale.

Mulimbika said investigations show that Given Marley had lit a fire outside his house to prepare cow hides with his younger brother, Stanford Marley, when the other two joined them carrying an old steering wheel. The group placed the steering wheel on the same fire in an attempt to dissolve it and extract scrap metal for sale.

The steering wheel suddenly exploded, splashing hot black liquid and injuring all four.

The victims were rushed to Ndirande Health Centre, where Stanford Marley was referred to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after sustaining serious facial injuries. The other three were treated as outpatients.
