Authorities in Malawi have reported a new development in the case of missing 11-year-old Comfort Masiye, who has been missing since 10 February.

According to the Malawi Police Service, officers earlier today received a call from individuals claiming the missing boy was in Balaka. The information was quickly passed to the child’s parents, who began making arrangements to travel and retrieve their son.

However, the situation took a worrying turn during follow-up discussions. The callers allegedly claimed they were keeping other children as well and soon began demanding money.

Police raised serious concerns after several red flags emerged: The callers refused to allow officers or the parents to speak directly with the child, they did not disclose the exact location of the boy and they also  began asking for money before providing any proof that the child was safe.

Due to these suspicious circumstances, police advised the parents not to travel for now, warning that the situation could be a scam or a dangerous setup.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities say they remain committed to locating the child. They have assured the family that once verified information becomes available, both the parents and the public will be informed.

Comfort was last seen around Katete Primary School bypass in Lilongwe.

Members of the public are urged to report any credible information to the nearest police station.
