Health authorities in Malawi are urging members of the public to report anyone found selling peanut-based Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), commonly known as Chiponde, to relevant authorities.
The Ministry of Health says the illegal sale of the product is putting the lives of people suffering from malnutrition at risk. The warning follows continued reports of RUTF being sold on the black market for profit despite a government ban.
Ministry spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe emphasized that RUTF is specifically produced to treat patients with malnutrition and should never be sold commercially.
Authorities have since appealed to the public to help protect vulnerable patients by reporting any illegal sales of the life-saving product.
