The Blantyre City Council has closed the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) office in Chichiri, Blantyre, over unpaid city rates amounting to K132 million.

The office, located near the Chichiri Museum, was sealed by council officials as part of an ongoing operation targeting property owners with outstanding city rate arrears.

Blantyre Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman, who is leading the exercise, said the action was taken after the party failed to settle the taxes owed to the council.

Osman, accompanied by his deputy Gerald Lipikwe and other council officials, is currently overseeing the enforcement operation aimed at ensuring that businesses and institutions settle their outstanding city rates.

Other properties that have also been closed include offices belonging to Pacific Limited in Limbe and the Malawi Housing Corporation office in Blantyre.

The council says the closures are part of efforts to recover unpaid revenues following the expiry of a 21-day ultimatum issued to all debtors.
