Residents of Nkhata Bay, particularly in the area of Senior Chief Timbiri, have raised concerns over alleged assault by community security personnel on suspected offenders.

One of the victims, Vincent Abedenigo, said he was beaten after being suspected of stealing and selling maize, adding that he has also witnessed several other individuals being assaulted under similar circumstances.

Despite the allegations, Chairperson of community security in the district, Foster Jungu Mhone, said this was the first time hearing such complaints, and promised to summon the officers involved for discussions.

However, one member of the community security team, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the assaults do occur, saying the severity often depends on the nature of the suspected offence.

Meanwhile, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for Nkhata Bay, Devoter Mithi, said police are not aware of such incidents, stressing that the law does not allow assault of suspects.
